"My mother has always been happy making work privately. The artistic path she chose after graduate school did not include wooing gallerists and curators, but rather focused on internal, personal exploration unadulterated by commerce and career concerns. She honed her practice over decades in her home studio, feeling her way through brightly colored, complexly layered, abstract compositions. Outside of family and a few close friends, her post-graduate work has never been viewed publicly. However, in celebration of her 85th birthday, I have collected over 50 of her surviving works from the past 60 years with the hopes of bringing her work out into the open, back into dialogue with the world–maybe even with the (capital "A") Art world that she never herself pursued. There is a wondrous freedom in art that was made in a protected space, out of view and without consideration of criticism. And it’s rare that that work would be of such high quality. Thank you for joining me in this celebration and I hope you enjoy taking a peek into my mother's inner world." -Ramsey Dau
